It was a golden afternoon, and sunlight poured through the window like liquid honey. Inside the cozy fort, Tira and Mia, best friends since forever, sat cross-legged with crayons, glitter pens, and two colorful slam books in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tira clutched her belly, laughing. \u201cI am<\/em> a joy machine! You always say I have magic eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tira smiled. \u201cYou do. Look!\u201d She flipped her book open to show a page with Sir Puffy drawn wearing a scarf made of red dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mia showed hers too\u2014Sir Puffy had stick arms and a hat. \u201cWe both picked the same memory!\u201d They laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The questions got deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat will we be when we grow up?\u201d Mia asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI wrote: I\u2019ll be a space-traveling artist\u2026 and you\u2019ll be my co-pilot who sings and paints stars,\u201d Tira said proudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mia wrote: \u201cWhen we grow up, we\u2019ll open a cupcake shop that gives free cupcakes to sad people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tira nodded thoughtfully. \u201cThat\u2019s a good plan too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a few more pages, the sun began to set, casting soft orange light across their blanket kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tira grew quiet. \u201cMia,\u201d she said, \u201cwhen we grow up\u2026 will you still remember me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mia blinked. \u201cOf course! Even if I have a hundred friends, you\u2019ll always be my number one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tira held out her pinky. \u201cPinky promise?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mia hooked her finger with hers. \u201cNever ever forget.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n They sealed the promise with a soft giggle, then hugged each other tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outside their blanket fort, the world kept spinning.
