It was a bright and breezy morning in the meadow. Birds chirped, bees buzzed, and little Benny the Bunny bounced happily through the tall grass.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But today\u2026 something felt odd.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny paused beside his favorite carrot patch and twitched his ears.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: (thinking) Hmm\u2026 something feels strange today. I keep hearing words that sound\u2026 different.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hopped a little further and overheard two children walking by on the path.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child 1: \u201cThe sky is so blue today!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child 2: \u201cYeah! And the flowers are so colorful!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny’s ears perked up.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: (scratching his head) Wait a minute. Why did they say is for the sky, but are for the flowers? I don\u2019t get it!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just then, there was a soft fluttering above him. A wise old owl named Ollie landed gently on the branch of a tree.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: (smiling) Hello, Benny! You look deep in thought. What\u2019s on your fluffy little mind?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: (frowning) Ollie, I heard those kids talking. They said, \u201cThe sky is blue\u201d and \u201cThe flowers are colorful.\u201d Why did they use two different words is and are?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie chuckled warmly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: Ah, Benny! That\u2019s a fantastic question. Those words are special helpers. We use is when we talk about just one thing, and are when we talk about many things.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed one wing up toward the sky.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: Look up. What do you see?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: Just one big sky.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: Exactly! So we say, \u201cThe sky is blue.\u201d One sky, one is.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Ollie nodded toward the field of daisies and tulips dancing in the wind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: Now look over there. What do you see?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: Lots and lots of flowers!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: That\u2019s right. So we say, \u201cThe flowers are colorful.\u201d Many flowers, many colors, and the helper word are.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny\u2019s eyes lit up like fireflies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: Ohhh! So if I have one carrot, I say, \u201cThe carrot is orange.\u201d But if I have many carrots, I say, \u201cThe carrots are orange!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: (nodding) You got it! You’re a grammar genius, Benny!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny giggled and did a happy hop.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: I didn\u2019t know words could be so fun! Is this why we say, \u201cBenny is a bunny,\u201d but \u201cBenny and his friends are playing?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: (impressed) Absolutely! One bunny? Use is. Many bunnies? Use are.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny thought for a moment and then looked very serious.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: Ollie, is there a time when both is and are go on vacation?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: (laughing) Not really, Benny. They\u2019re always working hard in sentences. But they love being used correctly!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny sat on a rock, smiling. He looked up at the sky, then down at a single daisy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: The daisy is beautiful. And then at the field. The daisies are dancing in the wind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He grinned proudly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benny: I\u2019m going to teach this to my squirrel friend Timmy! He always says, \u201cThe apples is red.\u201d Not anymore!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: Good idea! When you learn something new, sharing it makes it even better.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Benny hopped off to find Timmy, Ollie called out:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ollie: Remember, Benny\u2014some of the smallest words make the biggest difference!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moral: Even the tiniest words, like \u201cis\u201d and \u201care,\u201d help us say big things clearly. When we understand them, we share our thoughts better\u2014and that\u2019s something to be proud of!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
